How to Use: Quick Reference Guide
The 1:4 Soroban Decks
- Heaven Deck (Upper): 1 bead on each rod, worth 5. Counted only when moved DOWN to touch the beam.
- Earth Deck (Lower): 4 beads on each rod, each worth 1. Counted only when moved UP to touch the beam.
- The Reckoning Beam: The horizontal dividing bar. Beads moved away from the beam represent zero (
0).
Place Values & Unit Markers
- Unit Dot (Center Marker): Look at the white dot on the reckoning beam (default Column #7). This is your ONES (1s) rod.
- Positional Notation: Moving left from the unit dot represents:
10s (Tens),100s (Hundreds), and1,000s (Thousands). - Decimals: Columns to the right of the unit dot represent fractional places (
0.1, 0.01).
Traditional Japanese Fingering
- Right Thumb (UP only): Exclusively used to flick lower Earth beads UP towards the reckoning beam (+1, +2, +3, +4).
- Right Index Finger: Used to move lower Earth beads DOWN (-1) and to move the Heaven bead both DOWN (+5) and UP (-5).
- Pinch Technique: Use thumb and index simultaneously to set composite numbers like 6, 7, 8, 9 in a single motion!
